This week's Dubai Airshow saw a surge in purchases from Middle Eastern airlines, with Airbus and Boeing each securing orders worth tens of billions of dollars.

As a long-time Boeing customer, Dubai-based low-cost carrier FlyDubai was a focal point during the airshow. On November 18, the company signed its first cooperation agreement with Airbus, placing an order for 150 A321neo aircraft, the most powerful model in the A320neo family.

Just one day later, Flydubai placed an order with Boeing for 75 737 MAX aircraft, worth approximately $13 billion, with an option to purchase an additional 75. This order allows Flydubai to freely choose between the 737 MAX 8, MAX 9, and the yet-to-be-certified MAX 10, depending on its future operational needs.

Meanwhile, Emirates Airlines announced a massive order at the Dubai Airshow, focusing on the Boeing 777X series, confirming an order for 65 777-9 aircraft, worth approximately $38 billion at list prices.

The airline's procurement agreement includes an option clause that allows some orders to be converted into new aircraft models that Boeing is planning, such as the 777-10 or the smaller 777-8, thereby supporting Boeing's feasibility study for the 777-10.

At this airshow, Emirates also strengthened its cooperation with Airbus, announcing an additional order for eight A350-900 aircraft (worth approximately US$3.4 billion). These new aircraft, expected to be delivered in 2031, will bring its total A350-900 fleet to 73.

Another UAE national airline, Etihad Airways, also expanded its Airbus fleet at the airshow, confirming orders for 6 A330-900s, 7 A350-1000s and 3 A350F freighters, and leasing in an additional 9 A330-900s.

In addition, Airbus said that Buraq Air of Libya has signed a provisional agreement to purchase 10 A320neo aircraft.
