According to data released by industry tracking firm Omdia on Friday, global DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) sales surged by 30% quarter-on-quarter in the third quarter (July-September) due to rising prices, with SK Hynix maintaining its top position for the third consecutive quarter .

Judging from the changes in DRAM market share, the competition among the world's three largest memory giants is extremely fierce.

In terms of sales revenue, SK Hynix held a 34.1% market share in the global DRAM market in the third quarter. Although this was a decrease of 5.3 percentage points from the previous quarter's 39.4%, it still maintained its number one position, marking its third consecutive quarter in the top spot.

In the quarter, Samsung Electronics' market share reached 33.7%, up 0.5 percentage points from 33.2% in the previous quarter, further narrowing the gap with SK Hynix. The market share difference between the two companies narrowed from 6.2 percentage points to 0.4 percentage points.

In terms of specific sales figures, SK Hynix's DRAM sales in the third quarter were $13.757 billion, while Samsung Electronics' were $13.62 billion, a negligible difference.

This is mainly because Samsung Electronics' HBM3E (5th generation) entered Nvidia's market. The supply chain, while its sales of general-purpose DRAM also increased.

Micron Technology It ranked third, with its market share rising from 22.4% in the second quarter to 25.8%.

In the first quarter of this year, SK Hynix surpassed Samsung Electronics in DRAM market share for the first time. This marks the first time in 33 years that Samsung Electronics has lost its position as the world's largest DRAM manufacturer.

Omdia data also shows that global DRAM sales reached $40.3 billion in the third quarter, a 30% increase from the previous quarter. This growth was attributed to rising DRAM contract prices and HBM ( High Bandwidth Memory) . Increase in shipments .

DRAM is currently the most widely used volatile semiconductor in the world. memory chip As the core operating memory of electronic devices, DRAM enables high-speed random access to data and is widely used in servers, mobile phones, PCs, and other scenarios requiring high-speed data processing.

HBM is a high-performance DRAM based on 3D stacking technology, and it is used in artificial intelligence. As the AI industry explodes, the demand for core components of AI applications is also growing rapidly.

Currently, SK Hynix holds a dominant position in the HBM market, with its HBM products primarily supplied to tech giants such as Nvidia and Google. (According to securities... ) Industry sources say that SK Hynix's HBM market share was 60.8% in the third quarter of this year, Samsung Electronics' was 17.2%, and Micron Technology's was 22%.
