The battle for leadership
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, Anthropic is best known for its Claude series of large language models. Previously, Google had invested over $3 billion in Anthropic, and according to a legal filing in March, Google acquired a 14% stake in the company.
In October of this year, Google and Anthropic also announced a multi-billion dollar cloud computing collaboration agreement, allowing Anthropic to use 1 million of Google's self-developed Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) designed to accelerate machine learning workloads.
In addition, Amazon has invested $14 billion in Anthropic, becoming its largest investor. Anthropic uses Amazon 's AWS custom chips to build and deploy its artificial intelligence models.
Anthropic stated last month that it will continue its partnership with Amazon, a major training and cloud service provider. It's worth noting that Amazon's Project Rainier—one of the world's largest AI computing clusters—recently went live, boasting nearly 500,000 Trainium 2 chips to provide computational support for the Claude series models.
In addition, Anthropic will also utilize Nvidia. The GPU is used to train and run its model.
The latest round of negotiations with Google comes as Anthropic and its main rival OpenAI engage in fierce competition for dominance in the field of foundational artificial intelligence models, vying for a lead in the trillion-dollar market capitalization race. In this race, major tech companies are clearly divided, with Amazon and Google both strongly supporting Anthropic, while Microsoft... Meanwhile, Nvidia is investing in OpenAI.
In September 2025, Anthropic completed a $13 billion funding round at a valuation of $138 billion. Meanwhile, OpenAI, last month, raised its valuation to $500 billion by allowing employees to sell shares in a secondary stock deal.
